The Final Meltdown

I’m not entirely sure I should be writing anything today. My brain is completely fried. I handed Resistance over to my copyeditor yesterday and I had a pretty stress-filled weekend getting it ready for her. I may have finally sorted the story out but, unfortunately, I’d neglected to pay attention to the fact the tenses are all over the place in some chapters. The reason for this is that I found it quite hard to write in third person present, it just doesn’t flow naturally. First person present is definitely easier to do but there is something about third person present that meant I kept slipping into third person past. Anyway, Pam has been wonderful and changed the tenses for me but I really should have picked up on it. I think I’ll give myself more room to breathe on deadlines in future to avoid these mishaps.

I filmed a short video on the weekend so you could witness how I handle the final story edit. It’s always the time I put the most pressure on myself because I know that after this point I’m not going to work on that aspect anymore and I get THE FEAR. Here’s the video:

I’m trying to get my brain to quieten down so I can actually sleep properly tonight. I need it to function because I’m planning a new book. Yes, that’s right, PLANNING. As you may know I am a pantser when it comes to writing. I’m working on a retelling and so I’m going through the original text and using the structure for my own novel. It’s a new way of doing things for me and I’m excited about the process. I am worried that the original author’s voice will sneak into my writing. It’ll be interesting to see how I face that challenge.

Resistance will be out in July, launching at YALC 2017 and I may be releasing Queen a little earlier. I’ll keep you apprised.
